We experience the Antarctic at its best during the brief but brilliant summer season, visiting stunning penguin rookeries, historical ruins and volcanic islands. With six full days on the Antarctic Peninsula, we have ample time to enjoy some of the most spectacular scenery in the world.
Our voyage begins in Ushuaia, Argentina, at the southern tip of South America. We set sail for Antarctica across the Drake Passage, in the company of historians and naturalists who lead seminars on wildlife and Antarctic history, preparing us for adventures to come. We wind our way among the volcanic South Shetland Islands and the waterways of the Antarctic Peninsula, traveling ashore as frequently as possible in our inflatable Zodiac boats.
Soon after our arrival, we’ll hope to make shore excursions to Livingston, Half Moon and King George Islands. Admiralty Bay, on King George Island, is a favoured feeding ground for humpback whales. On Livingston Island we hope to see fur and elephant seals, giant petrels and rookeries of chinstrap and gentoo penguins.
Our journey continues on to Paradise Harbour or Hope Bay, both on the Antarctic mainland. Here we’ll see some of the most dramatic scenery in the world: icebergs in many different shapes and sizes - those that have eroded into natural ice sculptures and enormous 'tabular' bergs. If ice conditions allow, we may make the incredibly scenic transit through the Lemaire Channel. The light of the southern sky bathes the landscape in an eerie luminescence.
The days are long and the short nights are often preceded by a wonderful twilight. We celebrate our last evening together on board at the Captain’s dinner, as we make our way to Ushuaia, where our voyage ends.
